Thousands of Brtish
people choose France for their holidays each year. Most will, at least, have dreamed
of one day living there permanently. An annual dose of true heat and piercing blue
skies is insufficent. The excellent wine at affordable prices and quality of food
make the pleasures of living in France undeniable.
But there is another
good reason that makes France an attractive country in which to live. It has the
highest quality of healthcare in the world. This was the conclusion reached in a
2000 survey by the World Health Organisation. Expathealthdirect has been assisting expatriates with their
health care planning in France for over a decade. During
the winter of 2007/8 when British expatriates were threatened
with withdrawal of their healthcare rights Expathealthdirect
was able to offer a wealth of background information to the
British Consulate in Marseille. This played a significant
part in those already affiliated retaining their rights.

French residents
have a choice of doctor and specialists. Waiting lists, such as those endured by
NHS patients in the UK, for the vast majority of procedures do not exist. The private
and state sector work along side each other in harmony.
The problem with
the French Health Service is that it is complicated and intensely bureaucratic in
its administration. An outline knowledge of the service is useful however as a forerunner
to actually registering in the system.
